Not illustrated. 1889 Excerpt: ... NOTES ON THE ANCIENT CHESHIRE FAMILIES OF BENNETT OF SAUGHALL MASSEY AND BENNETT OF BARNSTON, WITH THEIR COLLATERAL BRANCHES. By E. M. Hance, LL.B. Part I. IN the possession of one of the members of this Society--Mr. Henry Bennett of Bedminster, a Justice of the Peace for the County of Somerset--are several ancient documents (of which reduced fac-similes are given in connection with this paper) relating to the above families. The first is a finely emblazoned pedigree (the work of the elder Randle Holme of Chester--deputy to Norroy King of Arms), tracing the descent of Thomas Bennett, Clerk of the Decrees in the High Court of Chancery in Ireland, from the Bennetts of Saughall Massey (or as it is there called Salghall Massy), in the county of Chester; the second an emblazoned certificate or description of the arms belonging to the sajd Thomas Bennett; the third an emblazoned certificate of the same arms--accompanied by the grant of a crest--by Thomas Preston, Ulster King of Arms; and the last a certificate purporting to be issued--though unsigned--by Sir William Segar, Garter Principal King of Arms, and confirming a crest and arms therewith emblazoned, as those belonging to Peter Bennett son of Thomas Bennett, of Barnston, in the county of Chester. Of these documents the only one that is dated is the grant and certificate of the Ulster King of Arms, which was issued on the 13th December, 1631. The pedigree, and description of the arms, of Thomas Bennett--which were no doubt procured with a view to this grant being obtained--must have been prepared earlier in the same year; for the former speaks of John Bennett, father of Thomas Bennett, as "now livinge, 1631, and is 66 yeares "of Age," whereas from another source I find that this John E Bennett died on the 2...
